Step 1: Complete the AACOMAS Application

KCUMB's College of Osteopathic Medicine participates in a centralized application service, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Applications Service (AACOMAS).

This centralized application service offers prospective students the convenience of completing a single online application that is transmitted electronically to each of the osteopathic medical schools designated by the applicant. AACOMAS facilitates the collection and verification of applicant information, computes grades and transmits standardized information, but it does not evaluate, select or reject applicants. That responsibility resides with each college.

In order to process your application, AACOMAS will require official copies of your transcripts from all colleges/universities you've attended. You will also need to have AAMC send your MCAT scores directly to AACOMAS.

Step 2: Accept invitation to complete KCUMB's secondary application

Once KCUMB receives your AACOMAS application that includes your MCAT scores, your file will undergo initial screening. Applicants who meet our minimum requirements will receive an invitation to complete our secondary application. A secondary application may be forwarded to an applicant under some circumstances when specific information is not available or has yet to be submitted. These circumstances generally relate to applicants who have not yet taken the MCAT and/or are registered to take the next scheduled MCAT exam. Applicants are encouraged to include the scheduled MCAT test dates on the AACOMAS application to indicate the intent of taking or retaking the exam.

The secondary application and secondary application fee is completed online. However, as part of the secondary application, supplemental documentation must be submitted by the applicant and received by the Admissions Office before the application is considered complete.

Step 3: Submit letters of recommendation

KCUMB's College of Osteopathic Medicine requires three letters of recommendation/evaluation to be submitted as part of the secondary application. Applicants must submit one from each of the following sources:

  • A physician (preferably an osteopathic physician)
  • A science faculty member who is familiar with the applicant's academic work
  • A premedical source
This could be an advisor's letter, a composite evaluation or evaluations from a committee. If a premed source is not available, please submit a letter or evaluation from another science faculty member.

Recommendation/evaluation letters do not have to be on the KCUMB letter templates. These templates are provided merely as a guide for those writing the letters. KCUMB does accept letters from Interfolio and/or Virtual Evals.

Letters should be mailed directly to the Office of Admissions by the letter writer and should never be handled by the applicant. If the applicant's school sends the letters on the applicant's behalf to the Office of Admission, that is acceptable as well.

In addition, recommendation/evaluation letters have a maximum acceptable life span – they must have been written within two years prior to the prospective student's application date.

Applicants who anticipate applying for military scholarships should make arrangements to obtain additional copies of evaluation letters. Military scholarship committees require original letters for this purpose. Applicants anticipating applying for these scholarships should obtain additional evaluation letters from evaluators and have the letters placed in officially sealed envelopes.

Step 4: Submit supplemental documentation (for candidates with college credit at foreign institutions or non-U.S. citizens)

College Credit at Foreign Institutions
As part of the secondary application, applicants with college credit at foreign institutions, or institutions teaching in a language other than English, must submit official foreign transcripts to one of the following evaluation services:

World Education Services, Inc.
P.O. Box 745
Old Chelsea Station
New York, NY 10113-0745
(212) 966-6311

Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
P.O. Box 514070
Milwaukee, WI 53203-3470
(414) 289-3400

Josef Silny and Associates, Inc. International Education Consultants
P.O. Box 248233
Coral Gables, FL 33124 (305)
273-1616

KCUMB's College of Osteopathic Medicine will accept credit from the evaluation report only if the evaluation service has indicated the coursework taken was similar to coursework taken at an institution that is comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

Non-U.S. Citizens
As part of the secondary application, applicants who are not U.S. citizens or do not have permanent U.S. resident status are required to provide the Admissions Office with a copy of their INS documentation and VISA.

Step 5: Complete Secondary Application

Once KCUMB receives your secondary application, secondary application fee and all supplementary documentation, your application will be considered complete and will be reviewed for interview consideration.

The major criteria for rating applicants for interview consideration are academic excellence and non-academic achievements. Academic excellence is measured by an assessment of the results of the Medical College Admissions Test, grades and grade point averages, modified by such information as the degree of difficulty of the program, which the applicant studied. Non-academic achievements are considered, as well as a candidate's ability and desire to fulfill the mission of the University. Non-academic activities, such as patient contact, community/volunteer services and leadership positions are a few examples of where the depth and duration of involvement are considered.

Step 6: Accept invitation for on-campus interview

Applicants who are invited to interview will be contacted by the Admissions Office and receive instructions for scheduling their interview. Applicants are expected to have researched the history and philosophy of osteopathic medicine.

Interviews are conducted beginning in September and will continue on a rolling basis until the class is filled. Following the on-campus interview, the applicants file and recommendations from the interview team are reviewed by the Admissions Committee to determine acceptance, deferred action or denial. Applicants are notified as soon as a final admission decision is made. Each year KCUMB's College of Osteopathic Medicine will enroll approximately 250 students in our 1st year class. The level of competition for these seats is determined by the number of applications received during the admission cycle and the academic competitiveness of the applicant pool.

Step 7: Submit supplemental documentation and fees for matriculation

If an offer of admission to attend KCUMB's College of Osteopathic Medicine is extended, the applicant must authorize the University to obtain a background check prior to matriculation.

In addition, the Admissions Office must receive a complete copy of the applicants immunization records, official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, and proof of personal health insurance.

If the results of a background check are deemed unfavorable by KCUMB or the applicant does not submit their supplemental documentation at least five business days before the start of the academic year, their offer of admission may be deferred or rescinded.

An acceptance fee and a matriculation deposit are required from successful applicants. (See Tuition, Fees and Expenses.) Acceptance is conditional until all supplemental documentation is received.

It is expected that all course work listed on the AACOMAS application will be completed with a grade of C or higher, and that expected degrees are completed by Aug. 1 of the matriculation year at KCUMB.

Note: AACOMAS does not forward official transcripts on behalf of the student. In addition, discovery after admission or matriculation of intentional misrepresentation or omission of any information used in the application process or omission of information relative to scholastic records or test records will subject the student to dismissal.

Matriculation will be denied to applicants who have failed to maintain a good record of scholastic performance and/or personal conduct between the time of their acceptance and their matriculation at the University. The University reserves the right to deny admission to any applicant for any reason it deems sufficient.
