Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences is designated by the American Medical Association and National Disaster Life Support Foundation as an National Disaster Life Support Regional Disaster Preparedness Training Center:

The NDLSF's mission is:

  • To extend the educational and networking activities in disaster medicine outside of the membership institutions
  • To promote the importance of specialized training for first responders, emergency room personnel, clinicians, and all healthcare providers
  • To encourage educational institutions and professional societies to provide curricular materials for broad-based, well-supervised training
  • To assist communities, states, and federal agencies by providing educational experiences and materials of the highest caliber and most advanced technology
  • To promote and facilitate the establishment and accreditation of affiliated training centers

Course Description: The American Medical Association, in partnership with four major academic medical centers and three national healthcare organizations, established the National Disaster Life Support (NDLS) Program to better prepare healthcare providers and emergency response personnel for mass casualty events. National Disaster Life Support Program
Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS)
Oct. 27, 2011

Level: Introductory; 8-hour lecture and group discussions
Audience: Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, medical examiners, allied health professionals, health profession students, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, emergency management and disaster relief workers.
BDLS Topics include:
  • All-hazards overview
  • Natural and human-made disasters
  • Traumatic and explosive events
  • Nuclear and radiological events
  • Biological events
  • Chemical events
  • Psychosocial aspects of terrorism and disasters
  • The role of the public health system

  • No prerequisites
  • Certificate of training, valid for 3 years
  • 7.5 PRA category 1 CME credits

Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS)
Oct. 28-29, 2011
Level: Advanced; 16-hour group scenarios with full-day, hands-on practice

Audience: Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and paramedics


ADLS Topics include:
  • Hospital and field triage techniques
  • Medical decontamination
  • Legal issues of a disaster response
  • Media and communications during a mass casualty incident
  • Healthcare facilities and planning
  • Community, state and federal responses
  • Mass fatality incidents' practical stations

  • Prerequisites: BDLS course
  • Certificate of training, valid for 3 years
  • 15.5 PRA category 1 CME credits
