Community Service & Outreach
Service is a way of life for students and employees at KCUMB. Everything we do is inspired by our seven core values: Integrity, Compassion, Excellence, Collaboration, Intellectual Curiosity, Innovation and Heritage. Throughout the year, the University offers its employees several fun and interesting opportunities to spend time away from the office, volunteering to help local organizations.
Arts Council
KCUMB showcases local artists through Now Showing, a rotating art exhibit on the fourth floor of the beautiful and historic Administration Building. Throughout the year, the University Events Department hosts elegant receptions to introduce each artist, giving students and employees the opportunity to view the artwork and visit with the artists.
Community Service Opportunities
KCUMB offers several opportunities for faculty and staff members to become active community leaders in the Kansas City Area. Faculty and staff can volunteer at local organizations such as food banks, local shelters and more. In addition to quarterly events, a campus-wide Community Service Day is held in early fall for students and employees.
For more information about community service, contact Sara Selkirk, executive director of community and student affairs, at sselkirk@kcumb.edu.
Community Garden and Park
The Community Garden and Park is located across from campus and offers a walking path, gazebo, fountain, picnic tables and plenty of green space. The garden is maintained by KCUMB employees and students. Vegetables harvested from the garden are donated to local organizations and farmers' markets.
DOCARE
For over 10 years, KCUMB has participated in DOCARE, an osteopathic outreach program that provides free medical care to those in developing countries such as Mexico, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Core faculty members serve as medical directors on the mission trips, and are typically accompanied by select 3rd and 4th-year medical students, as well as students from the UMKC School of Medicine.
Score 1 for Health
Sponsored by KCUMB and the Deron Cherry Foundation, Score 1 for Health is a non-profit organization that administers free, comprehensive health screenings to elementary-aged children living in Kansas City's urban core. Our first- and second-year medical students participate in health screening days, providing pediatric health assessments. KCUMB employees can also volunteer to assist with Score 1 for Health screenings.
United Way
Every year, University employees are invited to participate in several weeks of fun-filled activities to benefit United Way, including Game Day, outdoor picnics and a chance to spend time with fellow employees and win exciting prizes. Since 1996, KCUMB has raised nearly $1 million for the United Way of Greater Kansas City, and continues to be a leader in fundraising for this vital community organization.
