  • KCUMB Professor Receives Heroes in Healthcare Medical Mission Award

    Magie Richard

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (February 24, 2012) – Ingram’s Magazine awarded Richard Magie, D.O., FACOP, FAAP, assistant professor and chair of pediatrics and medical director of KCUMB Physician Associates, the Heroes in Healthcare award in the medical mission category today during a special breakfast presentation at the Kansas City Downtown Marriott Hotel.

Returning just two days ago from a medical mission trip in Guatemala, Dr. Magie arrived home just in time to be recognized for his efforts to provide health care abroad.

According to Joe Sweeney, editor-in-chief and publisher of Ingram’s Magazine, the Heroes in Healthcare awards recognize those who go out of their way to provide exceptional health-care services. An award in the medical mission category recognizes the efforts of people who not only go out of their way to serve, they go out of the country to promote improved health.

“The Heroes in Healthcare awards celebrate the unsung heroes who provide our health-care services each and every day,” Sweeney said.

Over the years, in addition to serving as a full-time faculty member and clinical physician, Dr. Magie has participated in more than two dozen medical mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala. On his most recent mission, he spent two weeks with KCUMB osteopathic medical students, faculty and staff treating people isolated in remote areas of Guatemala.

According to Dr. Magie, his efforts abroad are fulfilling and even addictive.

“I get so much more out of it than I ever give,” Dr. Magie said.
