KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 17, 2012) – Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences announced today the appointment of Jeffrey N. Joyce, Ph.D., as vice president for research, effective Nov. 1.

“Dr. Joyce brings a wealth of relevant research experiences to KCUMB,” said H. Danny Weaver, D.O., KCUMB president and chief executive officer. “We are excited to have a researcher of this caliber continue to help build KCUMB’s expanding research program.”

Joyce comes to KCUMB from the Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) in Phoenix, where he served as director of the Division of Research since 2007. He also was appointed research professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine − Phoenix and associate professor in School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University.

Prior to his tenure at MIHS, Joyce served as associate director of Sun Health Research Institute in Sun City, Ariz., and senior scientist at Thomas H. Christopher Parkinson's Disease Research Center.

An internationally known researcher and pharmaceutical consultant in central nervous system drug discovery, Joyce’s work has led to target development for drug discovery in both schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. He has been awarded more than 25 federal, state and pharmaceutical industry grants and has served on multiple review boards for National Institutes of Health and Veteran’s Administration.

Joyce earned a bachelor of science in biology/psychology cognate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a doctor of philosophy in physiological psychology from the University of Florida. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Irvine.
