KANSAS CITY, Mo. (October 25, 2011) – Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and the Missouri Comets indoor soccer team agreed to a three-year agreement for the University to be a medical provider for the team.

John Dougherty, D.O., associate dean and professor of sports medicine at KCUMB, sees this new joint venture as an opportunity for students and residents to work with professional athletes as well as Kansas City area youth through the Comets Youth Soccer Camp programs.

“KCUMB has a strong sports heritage and we look forward to being even a small part of the Comets drive to win the Missouri Indoor Soccer League championship,” Dr. Dougherty said.  “We are equally excited for the opportunity to provide clinical experiences for KCUMB osteopathic medical students and residents.”

According to Brian Budzinsky, president for the Comets, KCUMB will provide medical services that will range from general medicine to orthopedics.

“Our guys play hard and no matter how hard we try to prevent it, there are going to be some bumps and bruises along the way,” Budzinsky said.  I’m delighted to know that when that happens, the staff at KCUMB will be there to get them back to playing shape as quickly as possible.”
