The National Commercial Builders Council recently awarded Straub Construction the Project of the Year Award for Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences’ Weaver Auditorium. This was the second award given to Straub Construction for their work on Weaver Auditorium. In October, the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., Heart of America Chapter, also awarded them the Excellence in Construction Award.

Weaver Auditorium was featured in Nation's Building News, the official electronic newspaper of the National Association of Home Builders, Commercial Builder magazine and in January at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas.

Straub Construction was the general contractor for Weaver Auditorium as well as the Mary L. Butterworth, D.O., Alumni Center and the Kesselheim Center for Clinical Competence, which are also located on the KCUMB campus.

Weaver Auditorium is located at the corner of The Paseo and Independence Avenue. The first of three buildings in an 111,000-square-foot complex to be completed by 2011, the 1,500-seat auditorium occupies 36,500 square feet and will be the center of the new complex that will also include a new campus library and a new student activities center.

Weaver Auditorium is named for late KCUMB alumnus Jack T. Weaver, D.O., who served as chair of the University’s Board of Trustees for more than 10 years; his wife, Mary; his son, H. Danny Weaver, D.O., current chair of the Board of Trustees; and his daughter-in-law, Debra S. Albers, D.O.

The auditorium includes a performance stage, specialty audio-visual center and lighting systems, and unique auditorium ceiling finish. Additional features include 6,500 square feet of granite flooring, extensive power and lighting provisions, curvilinear walls, cherry paneling, fluted cherry column covers, and a two-story lobby with open ornamental iron elliptical stairway.
