Hospital Day gives KCUMB medical students the opportunity to learn about various internship and residency programs across the United States. Our students come to Hospital Day prepared with questions that are important to them in learning about specific programs. Below are some of the most common things that our students want to know and may ask at Hospital Day.
Questions from medical students regarding elective opportunities, internship and residency programs:
- How big is the hospital? (Number of beds in use)
- What is the average census?
- How would you describe the patient demographics?
- What community service programs does your residency participate in?
- What percentage of staff are MD/DO?
- What services are available at the hospital? (e.g. neonatal unit, CAT scan, MRI, cardiac rehabilitation unit, physical therapy, etc.)
- What level is the ER? How many ER visits per year?
- Is there a heliport?
- How many deliveries a year?
- How many surgeries a year?
- How many outpatient surgeries a year?
- What specialties are represented at the hospital?
- What other programs are taking place? (e.g., nursing students, physician assistants, pharmacy students, clergy students, etc.)
- How many students are on service together?
- How many interns/residents are assigned to service?
- Are there OMT tables in-house? On each floor?
- Does the hospital offer internships?

- What was the most important factor that made you decide to come to this program?
- What are your plans after graduation?
- What's a typical week, month, year like for a first year, second, and third year?
- What is call like? What kind of backup is provided?
- When leave of absence becomes necessary, what happens?
- How do you deal with the stress of residency?
- If there are other residency programs in-house, how do you view their presence?
- What do you/other residents do outside the hospital for community service and for fun?
- Where do you feel most of your learning is coming from?
- What are the program's areas of strength?
- What are the program's areas where improvements could be made?
