I received the message, “Maximum number of users exceeds user limit.” Why can’t I use this resource?
Some of the publishers/databases put a limit on the number of users allowed access at one time. Simply try again later.
Why can’t I get full text access to all articles in PubMed?
The Library does not subscribe to all of the journals indexed in PubMed. If the citation has a KCUMB Electronic Collection button, this should take you to the full text. However, you can also access this citation, full text, through the E-Journals section of the website.
How do I get an article I need full text?
If you have a citation for an article, you can check the E-Journals list to see if we subscribe to the online edition. Search by title and click on the link to the journal’s website and look for the citation information. Contact the Library if you have any problems with access to a full text journal article.
If you do not have a specific article, but need to find an article on a certain subject, begin a search in either PubMed or Ovid. Not all of the results retrieved from a search in these databases will be full text. When using PubMed you should look for the purple boxes that indicate the KCUMB electronic or print collection. For Ovid, begin by choosing “YourJournals@Ovid” as this will restrict your search to full text journals the Library subscribes to.
If you have questions or you cannot retrieve the full text article, please ask for assistance from the Library.

How do I do a MEDLINE search?
The KCUMB Library has three ways to access MEDLINE. Full text will only be available from journal titles the Library subscribes to. All of these databases need to be accessed through the Library’s website by clicking on the database link. If you are accessing from off-campus, authentication is required with your barcode and last name.1. PubMed: This database includes MEDLINE and other information. Although it is free on the Internet (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), you will only be able to access full text articles which the Library subscribes to by using the link from the Library’s website. To limit search results to MEDLINE citations only, select MEDLINE from the Subsets pull-down menu on the Limits tab. All MEDLINE citations will have the tag of [PubMed – indexed for MEDLINE] at the end of the citation. 2. Ovid: This consists of several databases, including MEDLINE, that the Library subscribes to. An advantage to using Ovid is that you can choose to just search MEDLINE, or search MEDLINE with other databases. Access is from the Library website link. 3. MD Consult: This database searches the Core Collection of MD Consult journals and books along with MEDLINE. Anything retrieved from your search displaying “From NIH/NLM MEDLINE” is taken directly from the MEDLINE database.
What are MeSH Headings in Medline?
MeSH is the National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary used for indexing articles for MEDLINE. MeSH terminology provides a consistent way to retrieve information that may use different terminology for the same concepts. You can use the MeSH database to find MeSH Terms and build a search strategy when using PubMed or when using OVID. In PubMed, at the Search Box from the MeSH database, you can build a PubMed search. Begin from any display format:
- Click the MeSH term check box, including specifications if using the Full display.
- Use the Send to pull-down menu to select one of the following:
- Search Box with AND
- Search Box with OR
- Search Box with NOT
- To add additional terms to this strategy, continue searching the database and add terms to the Search Box using the Send to Search Box feature.
- When you have completed your search, click Search PubMed.
When using OVID, click on the Search field tab and choose sh: MeSH Subject Heading.
How do I sort and display MEDLINE search results?
If you are searching PubMed and need to display results in a certain type of format, the Help section on this topic covers this very well. At the Action Bar, located at the top of the search results screen, you can change the citation display format, change the number of citations shown per page, and sort your search results. You can use the “Send to” option to create a printer friendly version of search results, save citations as a text file, save citations temporarily using the Clipboard, or email citations.
For Ovid, search results can be displayed in different formats. By choosing the Reprint/Medlars format in the Results Manager, you can display search results in Medline format and save or print your results for your assignment.
