How Do I? (FAQs)

What are MeSH Headings in Medline?

MeSH is the National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary used for indexing articles for MEDLINE. MeSH terminology provides a consistent way to retrieve information that may use different terminology for the same concepts. You can use the MeSH database to find MeSH Terms and build a search strategy when using PubMed or when using OVID. In PubMed, at the Search Box from the MeSH database, you can build a PubMed search. Begin from any display format:

1. Click the MeSH term check box, including specifications if using the Full display.

2. Use the Send to pull-down menu to select one of the following:

  • Search Box with AND
  • Search Box with OR
  • Search Box with NOT

3. To add additional terms to this strategy, continue searching the database and add terms to the Search Box using the Send to Search Box feature.

4. When you have completed your search, click Search PubMed.

When using OVID, click on the Search Fields tab and choose sh: MeSH Subject Heading.
