The Curriculum

College of Osteopathic Medicine
KCUMB believes that outside-the-box thinking and access to hands-on clinical experiences help students prepare for future clinical training and become more effective physicians. For that reason, the College of Osteopathic Medicine is a leader in reforming the way medicine is taught.

Through KCUMB’s Genesis Curriculum, first introduced in 2000, students begin acquiring clinical understanding from the first days of their medical education. Accompanied by clinical presentation enhancements such as patient simulators, standardized patients and professional actors who teach vital patient-communication skills, the curriculum has received national and international recognition for its focus on the all-important physician-patient relationship.

In a unique clinical presentation-based educational continuum, KCUMB puts the patient at the center of the learning process, drawing on a wide range of medical disciplines to integrate clinical relevance with a solid foundation in the basic sciences. KCUMB’s curriculum incorporates four-year learning objectives, with enhanced third- and fourth-year clinical clerkships and integrated academic assessment.

During the third and fourth years of study, students receive advanced clinical training in a wide variety of medical settings, both in Kansas City and throughout the United States. A medical education affiliation agreement with HCA Inc., the largest hospital system in the greater Kansas City area, ensures continuity of educational collaboration for both pre-doctoral clerkships and post-doctoral internships and residencies.
