Counseling
Services
KCUMB understands the intense environment and extra stress which
medical students experience. Because we know how important it
is for KCUMB students to be emotionally healthy, KCUMB offers
up to five counseling sessions for each student. Students are
encouraged to speak with the Director of Student Services at
the onset of any emotional uneasiness, including depression,
anxiety, and stress-related symptoms.
After
speaking with the Director of Student Services, students will
be referred to the UMKC Community Counseling Services (CCS).
CCS is a counselor and psychologist training center for masters
and doctoral level students. Much like physicians in residency,
UMKC's counselors are completing their counseling and psychology
training. They offer their expertise in a professional setting
under the supervision of university faculty who are licensed
psychologists. CCS provides convenient hours and a convenient
location for KCUMB students.
The Director
of Student Services may also recommend that the student see
a KCUMB-suggested counselor for special needs or for medication
consulting. In these situations, KCUMB will pay for the first
two visits. The University cannot pay for the combination of
sessions from the UMKC Counseling Services and other counselors.
If a student is currently seeing a counselor or has a specific
counselor they would like to see, the student should discuss
this with the Director of Student Services.
The mission
of the counseling program is to assist students in remaining emotionally
healthy. Students are encouraged to speak with the Director of
Student Services at the onset of any emotional uneasiness, including
depression, anxiety, and stress-related symptoms. The Director
of Student Services will assist the student in finding the appropriate
help the student needs.
There
will be no record in the student's permanent file that counseling
services were provided.
Injuries
Occurring on Campus
If a student experiences an accident or injury on campus, the
student should report the incident to the Director of Student
Services immediately, and not later than 24 hours after the occurrence.
If the University is closed, the incident should be reported
the next business day. The Director of Student Services will
supply the student with an Accident/Injury Report form which
must be completed and returned. If the injury requires a physician's
care, the student may seek care at the Student Health Center
(Mon. - Fri., 7:30am - 8:30am, 1st Floor Ed. Pavilion, by appointment.
Note: Hours subject to change.) or at the KCUMB Family Care Center
(5155 Raytown Road, next to MCI). If a physician's care is needed
and the Student Health Center and Family Care Center are closed,
the student should seek medical attention at the nearest health
care facility.
Vaccinations/Immunizations
All first year students enrolling at the University are required
to be immunized for Hepatitis-B, Poliomyelitis, Rubella, Mumps,
Tetanus and have a TB test. Students again must have a Mantoux
TB test before going on clinical assignment. Failure to meet requirements
can result in serious delays in the student's educational progress.
