Kansas City University of Medicine and
Biosciences' new name reflects an ever-broadening mission
in educating physicians, scientists and health-care
leaders. A private university comprising a College of
Osteopathic Medicine founded in 1916 and a new College
of Biosciences that will
accept
its first students in 2005, KCUMB is the oldest medical
school in Kansas City and the largest in Missouri.
Located in Kansas City's historic Northeast Neighborhood,
the University remains committed to the city's urban
core. With its active participation, Kansas City and
a private developer recently completed redevelopment
of the neighboring former University Hospital into a
mixed-use facility that houses 224 apartments - most
rented by KCUMB students - and the city's fire, dispatch
and emergency-preparedness departments. Through its
Score 1 for Health program, KCUMB students and faculty
annually conduct some 13,000 health screenings in more
than 30 urban-core elementary schools. The KCUMB community
- students, faculty and administration - annually contribute
more than 100,000 hours of service to organizations
within our community.
The University's beautifully landscaped campus on the
site of the original Children's Mercy Hospital is just
minutes from Kansas City's River Market, the 18th and
Vine Jazz District, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum,
Kansas City's famed Country Club Plaza, Worlds of Fun
and Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums.
