The 2014 DOCARE medical mission trip to Guatemala once again touched thousands of lives. KCU students, alumni and employees banded together with other volunteers, including physicians from residency programs from Arizona and Texas, to provide much-needed treatments to the underserved populations of seven rural Guatemalan communities.

As in years past, the region continues to face economic difficulties, and community members struggle to provide basic needs, such as food, for their families. DOCARE provided relief through free medical services. Thanks to program sponsors and volunteers, medications, steroid injections, dermatological treatments (such as biopsies and cyst removals), and dental treatment were dispensed to over 2,600 patients. They also distributed books in Spanish to children, donated by the KCU D'Angelo Library.
Participation in DOCARE trips provides medical students a broader viewpoint of healthcare. Year after year, students return with enhanced understanding of global healthcare challenges, as well as a heart to help. Fourth-year medical student Philip Napolitan shared how through his experience, he gained understanding of the strengths found in a team.
"Whether it was the ability to speak Spanish, perform OMT, or to diagnose a complicated patient in the clinic, we each put forth our best strengths and turned to our classmates in our weaknesses." said Napolitan. "Collectively, we complimented each other in a beautiful way."
Sponsoring a medical student's 2015 DOCARE trip is one way you can support this important outreach effort. A trip can be sponsored for as little as $1,500, and can prove life-changing for both the students and the treated patients.
