What to Wear

To all general University events on May 7 & 8: 
Business casual attire. No sandals, shorts or T-shirts.

To Class Photo on May 9 (required of all graduates)
Gown, University honor medallions/cords. NO mortar boards/tams. Under gown: professional attire, closed-toe dress shoes.

To Commencement on May 9 (required of all graduates)
Gown, University honor medallions/cords, mortar boards/tams. Under gown: professional attire, closed-toe dress shoes.

 General Information

Commencement Announcements
Graduation announcements will be available for order in the Campus Store starting January 2, 2020.  Check back for more details or visit the Campus Store.

Military Students
Commissioning of officers into the Armed Forces is done on stage during the ceremony. Please wear your appropriate military dress uniform under your gown. Those students involved will be contacted in the next few months with additional details.

Academic Honors, Honorary Fraternities
Latin honor graduates and members of Psi Sigma Alpha will receive medallions. Members of Sigma Sigma Phi and Gold Humanism will receive honor cords. These will be distributed with your attire on Thursday, May 7. You will wear your medallion(s)/cords for the Class Photo and Commencement Ceremony.

Professional Photos
The University has combined photography services into one vendor: Lifetouch Photography of Des Moines, Iowa. Lifetouch photographers will take composite photos, class photo, hooding photos, diploma photos and a variety of candid’s.

They will also collect information from you in advance so that you can receive emails directly from them for proofs and to purchase items.

In addition to the basic photos, you will also be able to purchase additional photos from their gallery of University-sponsored events (not Senior Week), mounted photos and collages or a personal book of just you and some favorite campus and ceremony shots to remember this momentous occasion.

All orders, payments and inquiries will be directly between Lifetouch and you. Take a look at their website.

Webcast & Video
In order to accommodate friends and family members who are unable to attend the ceremony in Municipal Auditorium, KCU will provide a live webcast of the Commencement Ceremony. Shortly following graduation video of the Commencement Ceremony will be available online. Please watch for the link on the KCU homepage.

Hometown Press Release
To help you share your news, KCU provides you with a news release template to complete and send to your hometown newspaper.

Additional details will be provided shortly following the commencement ceremony.

Are commencement activities required?
Please see calendar for all required activities. If you are not able to attend any of the activities, you will need to request permission from your school dean. 

How many tickets do I get to commencement?
Municipal Auditorium is open seating and does not require tickets. No seats can be reserved, with the exception of special needs seating which must be requested through the Commencement Form.

Do I pay for my regalia?
KCU will pay for regalia for all graduates. Guest hooders pay for their own regalia.

What are the requirements for a guest hooder?

What hotels do you recommend?
We have negotiated rates at three hotels. Please see hotel info for these three properties along with all other nearby options. 

Where do I park for rehearsal and the ceremony?
One complimentary parking voucher will be available in the parking garage below the Barney Allis Plaza for all graduates. Enter the garage from Wyandotte or Central Streets between 12th and 13th streets. Well-lit tunnels with directional signage connect the garage to the Convention Facilities. Additional cars will be charged for parking. All additional parking options downtown can be found here.

Is my family invited to the campus?
Current graduates and their families are encouraged to attend. Faculty and staff will also be in attendance. Current students (other than graduates) do not attend.

Are pets allowed at the picnic?
Pets (other than service animals) are not allowed at the picnic or on campus.
